“Live Like You Were Dying” is a song recorded by American country music artist Tim McGraw, and was the lead single from his eighth album of the same name (2004). It was written by the songwriting team of Tim Nichols and Craig Wiseman. The duo crafted the song based on family and friends who learned of illnesses (cancers), and how they often had a new perspective on life upon learning they had limited time. They decided to write a song based on the concept, hoping that it might inspire someone in such a situation. The song’s lyrics center on experiencing life to its fullest, while also becoming a better person.

Released in June 2004 as the lead single from the album, the song became an enormous success in the U.S. It spent seven weeks atop of the Billboard country music charts; the magazine later dubbed it the biggest country song of the year. “Live Like You Were Dying” won several awards, including Single of the Year and Song of the Year at the 2004 Country Music Association Awards and at the 2004 Academy of Country Music Awards and the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Country Song. The music video, directed by Sherman Halsey, was nominated for Video of the Year at the 2004 Academy of Country Music Awards. It has sold over two million copies in the U.S.

“Live Like You Were Dying” tells the story of a man in his early forties who gets the news that his father has an unspecified, life-threatening illness. His father’s message is to live life to the fullest and do things that he had always wanted to do, such as skydiving, mountain climbing, fishing, and bull riding. He also says that he became a better husband and friend. McGraw then switches perspective to himself, talking about how going fishing with his dad stopped being an imposition and how he finally, after reading the Bible, took a long hard look back over his life and took his father’s advice by going skydiving, mountain climbing, horse, bull riding, and so much more.

This song is often associated with McGraw’s father, Tug McGraw, who was hospitalized with a brain tumor on March 12, 2003. It was revealed that he had cancer. He was given three weeks to live by the doctors, but surprisingly survived nine months. He died on January 5, 2004.[1]

The song was written by Tim Nichols and Craig Wiseman. The duo had a friend who received a medical misdiagnosis regarding a form of lung cancer. Wiseman and Nichols began discussing family members and friends who learned of illnesses, and how they often had a new perspective on life upon learning they had limited time. They decided to write a song based on the concept, hoping that it might inspire someone in such a situation.[2] After they came up with the title, they began writing the first verse and chorus.[3] They found themselves attached to the song, and continued to write in late into the night over the phone.[4] “I remember going in my totally dark living room, laying on the floor, and we wrote the second verse on the phone,” Wiseman recalled. The inclusion of the lyric about riding a bull was intended as a sort of “palette cleanse,” as they felt the chorus was growing too sentimental. The duo judged its creation as a “really spiritual thing, because it came strong. Me and Tim’s instincts and intuitions just kept leading us.”[2]

The song was demoed within a few days of its writing by Wiseman, and was chosen by McGraw to be his next lead single.[3] Wiseman remembered the song had personal significance for McGraw, who commented that he himself had gone fishing with his father prior to a quadruple bypass surgery.[2]

The music video features Tim McGraw singing in an infinity cove with video clips added by CGI. The alternate version of the video, directed by Sherman Halsey, McGraw’s usual director of choice, ends with a clip of the late Tug McGraw pitching the final strike for the 1980 World Champion Philadelphia Phillies, which, at the time, was the team’s only World Series Championship. The video was nominated for Video of the Year at the 2006 Academy of Country Music Awards.

Daddy Yankee, “Que Tire Pa’ ‘Lante”

Daddy Yankee keeps blessing fans with catchy bops that have a global appeal. Following worldwide hits such as “Dura” and “Con Calma” comes “Que Tire Pa’ Lante,” a song that perfectly puts Yankee’s freestyle rapping in the spotlight.

The new single premiered Oct. 17 during the 2019 Latin American Music Awards and features cameos from his colleagues such as Wisin, Anuel AA, Bad Bunny and Natti Natasha. The music video, which currently has more than 60 million views, dropped the following day at midnight, showing — in true DY fashion — a group of dancers and emojis jamming to the song.

On the Billboard charts, “Que Tire Pa Lante” debuted at No. 10 on the Hot Latin Songs chart dated Nov. 2, marking Yankee’s 30th top 10. He now breaks from a three-way tie for the third-most top 10s on the tally, trailing Luis Miguel (39) and Enrique Iglesias (38).

The song is about a girl who is a great dancer and he compliments her by asking her “que tire pa’ lante,” meaning that he wants to see more of her dance moves.

Check out the lyrics translated to English below.

You’re naughty

You talked a lot, but you have no way out

Now show me

Que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire

Que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire

Que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire

Que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire

Que tire, que tire pa’ ‘lante

Que tire pa’ lante with your dance moves

If you see her, she’s the favorite dancer

If you see how she moves her hips

If you see her, we’re not getting feelings

Baby, what you want is fire!

Model those sexy pants for me (yeh-yeh-yeh)

You know you want this, don’t act crazy (¡toma!)

Tsunami Warning, be pending (uah)

If you sleep with me the wave will take you (¡zumba!)

The brush makes a sound when I play it

I’m a bad boy but also a good one

I have a Ferrari flow that breaks the streets

A horse that has no brake

I arrive marking territory

My squad with all the holes

We never bring the movie down

We always have it in premiere (zumba!)

Baby, you have that power

Dancing, your flow navigates more than a browser

Continue dancing that way and you’ll win the case

Move it, punish it, whip it

Slowly, that’s how I like it

Slowly, tell me how you want it

Slowly, aha

You wanted more, I didn’t talk, tell me

Que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire pa’ ‘lante

Que tire pa’ ‘lante with your dance moves of champion

Que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire pa’ ‘lante

Que tire pa’ ‘lante with your dance moves

If you see her, she’s the favorite dancer

If you see how she moves her hips

If you see her, we’re not getting feelings

You have a baby face but you’re a killer

I like how you move, ma’, I like your vibe

A pair of wolves are watching you but you’re with Godzilla

Those people look like sneakers, you had them making FILA (besides a shoe brand, “fila” also means ‘line’ in English)

So, tell me, tell me, tell me ma’, what’s up?

We’re live, everyone is filming you

Go viral, you need to shine today

Because you stole the show

Slowly, that’s how I like it

Slowly, tell me how you want it

Slowly, aha

You wanted more, I didn’t talk, tell me

You’re naughty

You talked a lot, but you have no way out

Que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire

Que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire

Que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire, que tire

Que tire pa’ lante with your dance moves

If you see her, she’s the favorite dancer

If you see how she moves her hips

If you see her, we’re not getting feelings

Baby, what you want is fire! (challenge)

I like you, I like you, I like you, ma!

If you win, I’ll leave with you (challenge)

I like you, I like you, I like you, ma!

If you win, I’ll leave with you (challenge)

I like you, I like you, I like you, ma!

If you win, I’ll leave with you (challenge)

I like you, I like you, I like you, ma!

If you win, I’ll leave with you (challenge)

Who, who (who-who), who’s this?

Daddy Yankee

Tiren

Que tiren, que tiren, que tiren pa’ ‘lante

(¡Trueno!)
